There is some deep cleansing going on right now. People are clearing out emotional and spiritual baggage they’ve been lugging around for lifetimes and feeling pretty good about the whole thing.
They should, they are a lot lighter now as a result. However, in my circle of friends alone, a number of people are throwing themselves at this task so hard and fast that they are turning what could be a cherished process into damn hard work. Along the way they are forgetting that they alone have the choice to lighten up and have fun.
People even talk about their spiritual ‘work’. I have done it myself many times but I’ve recently come to realise that by labelling it as such I was missing an important point. Each release, every new step up the rung of self discovery towards an elevated consciousness can feel sublime. It’s when we approach the task with the same mentality that we apply to climbing the corporate ladder that we experience lulls in energy and run out of momentum. This piece might be more accurately titled ‘how to honour the feminine’ or maybe ‘redefining feminism as a set of positive intentions’. I think labels can be unhelpful. I mean fine, stick labels on a buffet, I’m not against letting people know which bowl is the veggie curry. However, applied to the smorgasbord of human experiences they are usually vast over simplifications, or else they are loaded with conflicted meaning and become misleading.
